The Bernina Trail

Explore Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Italy in this 7 day rail adventure through Zurich, St. Gallen, Vaduz, St. Moritz, Lugano and Lucerne.  Plus take a ride on the spectacular Bernina Express.    

THE BERNINA TRAIL  RAIL TOUR HIGHLIGHTS:

DAY 1 - ZURICH - Arrive in Zürich. Check into your hotel in the afternoon.  Explore on your own - everything is in walking distance and the Bahnhofstrasse is only a short distance away.  

DAY 2 - ZURICH / ST. GALL / LIECHTENSTEIN / ZURICH - By fast train to St. Gallen to spend a few hours in the old part of the city.  A visit to the Abbey Library, Europe's oldest library and the Cathedral is recommended.  In the afternoon by train to Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein.  See the castle above town where the Prince and his family live. Then return to Zurich for overnight. (BB)  

DAY 3 - ZURICH / ST. MORITZ - Fascinating train ride into the mountains, up to Engadine valley and to St. Moritz, the world famous alpine resort. (BB)  

DAY 4 - ST.  MORITZ - A day at leisure to explore the valley with its many lakes or to ascend one of the mountains by mountain railroad. (BB)  

DAY 5 - ST. MORITZ / BERNINA EXPRESS / LUGANO - From St. Moritz by BERNINA EXPRESS, probably the most spectacular train ride through the mountains to Tirano in Italy and by postal coach along the Italian Lakes to Lugano in southern Switzerland (Italian visa necessary for some nationalities). (BB)

DAY 6 - LUGANO / LUCERNE - The famous Gotthard line north to Lucerne.  The journey can be done partly by boat (even paddle steamer) from Fluelen to Lucerne.  Lucerne, the city with the famed Chapel Bridge can be easily explored on foot. (BB)  

DAY 7 - LUCERNE / ZURICH - Leave Lucerne by train for the  Zürich Airport for departure. (BB)
